About the position: National Braille Press is seeking a reliable and energetic individual to work in the finishing department of a small, well-established braille publishing company in Boston, Massachusetts. Responsibilities include the collation, binding, and packaging of customized braille material, text reading and other minor administrative tasks. Basic knowledge of PC and Microsoft Word/Excel required. This is a full-time position in a demanding and fast-paced production environment.

Major Areas of Responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Perform collation, folding, binding, and packaging for braille products.
  • High quality work keeping on a deadline etc.
  • Safely operate bindery, pressing, or collating equipment as required by production schedule, including: embossers, thermoform machines, UV printer, saddle stitchers, Heidelberg presses, industrial cutter, riveter, electric and manual pallet jacks, etc.
  • Monitor braille properties, including stock quality and product quality within the finishing department.
  • Assist in the receipt, storage, inventory, and shipments of raw and finished goods.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of shared workspace on the production floor.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Excellent command of the English language: ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with coworkers.
  • The ability to lift 30 pound boxes to a height of 3-4 feet and load them into trucks.
  • Basic knowledge of PC and Microsoft Word/Excel is required.

  • This position is on site in Boston, MA
  • About the position: National Braille Press is looking for flexible part-time employees with open availability to work on-site with a braille proofreader. A qualified individual will read print text aloud while a blind braille proofreader simultaneously verifies braille text and images for accuracy. A background in math and science is strongly preferred, but not required. The position is seasonal and on-call, Monday through Friday, 8-5pm, but hours may fluctuate day-to-day dependent upon the volume of work.

  • This position is full-time, on site in Boston, MA.
  • About the position: National Braille Press is seeking a reliable and energetic individual to work as a braille transcriber, converting print texts, including books, magazines, and other print material into braille, large print, and other accessible formats.

    A transcriber is detail-oriented, organized, logical, and possesses excellent concentration. He/she understands the subtleties of guideline application, considers the end reader as well as the needs of the client, and makes decisions expeditiously to complete an assignment. This role is critical component in a demanding and fast-paced production environment.

Major Areas of Responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Transcribe electronic files of print material into braille that is complete, accurate, timely, and formatted according to guidelines set forth by the Braille Authority of North America, National Braille Press standards, and/or to customer specifications.
  • Typeset for title pages, spines, book cards, large-print projects as needed.
  • Operate all relevant machinery and software, including braille translation software, scanners, embossers, plate-embossing-devices, stereotypers, printers, dot knockers, etc.
  • Work with braille proofreaders and prepress support staff to make all necessary corrections to braille material.
  • Provide in-house support and finishing work for material transcribed by outside contracted transcribers.
  • Function as a responsible and reliable employee of the corporation. A transcriber has a clear understanding of our mission statement, and is prepared to effectively represent the company in the general community.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of work experience.
  • Excellent command of the English language, spelling, and grammar.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle concurrent, multiple job tasks.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to pose appropriate questions, gather information, and apply resolutions.
  • Strong working knowledge of PC-based computers and Microsoft Office.
  • Prior knowledge of braille codes is desirable.

  • About the position: National Braille Press is seeking a reliable and energetic individual to work as a braille tactile graphics transcriber, converting print images and diagrams into braille and tactile raised line images.
  • A transcriber is detail-oriented, organized, logical, and possesses excellent concentration. He/she understands the subtleties of guideline application, considers the end reader as well as the needs of the client, and makes decisions expeditiously to complete an assignment. This role is critical in a demanding and fast-paced production environment.

Major Areas of Responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Utilize electronic files of print images and diagrams to design braille tactile graphics that are complete, accurate, timely, and formatted according to guidelines set forth by the Braille Authority of North America, National Braille Press standards, and/or to customer specifications.
  • Work within design software and collage elements to design and produce digital and physical versions of tactile graphics, adhering to the Guidelines and Standards of Tactile Graphics, 2010, from the Braille Authority of North America.
  • Work with braille proofreaders to create most accessible tactile graphics and prepress support staff to make all necessary corrections to braille material.
  • Operate all relevant machinery and software, including braille translation software, scanners, embossers, and laser cutters to produce tactile graphic elements.
  • Provide support for material transcribed by outside contracted transcribers.
  • Function as a responsible and reliable employee of the corporation. A transcriber has a clear understanding of our mission statement, and is prepared to effectively represent the company in the general community.
