Support Hands On! for Blind Children and Lifelong Learning
We help blind children and adults achieve self-sufficiency and independence
by publishing braille books and by advocating for literacy -- because the ability
to read and write, in braille or print, is the single most important gateway
to opportunity. In that spirit, we produce braille storybooks, textbooks,
novels, and practical titles on topics from computers and cooking to handicrafts
and health.
Our philosophy that blind readers should pay the same retail prices as their
sighted peers means that our operational budget is supported nearly one-third
by charitable underwriting. See what your dollars can do!
Blind children become readers just like sighted children do-at home and
at school. Most children get ready to read by seeing the printed word all
around them. Blind children can't learn to read that way. You have to put
braille into their hands.
We are successfully providing story books, textbooks, and parent advocacy
materials to many blind children and their families nationwide.
But, we still face some sad realities. Too few blind kids know braille. Even though
the nation's "No Child Left Behind" policy mandates braille for blind children
who are capable of learning to read, many are still being left behind.
Few school districts prioritize braille teachers and braille books. Families
must advocate for braille instruction, and many blind students wait all year
for braille versions of required textbooks, especially in math and science.
Overall, blind children must have more access to braille, and more braille books,
to achieve equal literacy with sighted children.
Through Hands On! Books for Blind Children you can help us pave the way to
equal literacy opportunity for blind children.
Help us today!

Blind people want and need the same reading choices
as sighted people. Our braille materials help blind readers enjoy daily life,
explore new careers, stay current with cultural and political issues, maintain their health, and grow in interpersonal
relationships.
