+
Snuggle Puppy, Counting Kisses, So Many Bunnies - all board books that toddlers love to read. Bumpy Basics is a collection of books for the youngest blind children, which gives them the opportunity to begin to learn about books and reading.

+
Our board books are a combination of print and braille - the same books that sighted children read, but adapted with braille labels. Sighted parents read to their blind toddler, teach them about books, and encourage them to find the braille bumps. These experiences are an important first step to becoming literate, but also give children the chance to expand their imaginations and giggle a little along the way.

+Center for Braille Innovation
+
A hub for imaginative new ideas, inventive tools, and professional expertise
+National Braille Press developed the Center for Braille Innovation to open up a whole new world of communication for blind people using braille and tactile-based technology. With technology changing daily, blind people need a variety of accessible and affordable tools that interact and complement braille.

+
+
Participating in the Digital Age Begins with Literacy
+[Insert image here - images/programs/b4ehome.jpg]
+Initially, students need to be able to take notes in class, work on papers, and refer to course materials in order to succeed in school. As they progress, in order to have a professional job, adults must be able read email, obtain information from the Internet, develop a PowerPoint presentation, or perhaps a legal brief.

+
+
Those who learn braille and develop fluency with technology have a significant advantage, are more employable, and are able to shift blindness from a problem to an inconvenience.

+
+
How Does Braille Complement Technology?
+An abundance of technical tools and gadgets are available to organize our lives, entertain us, and connect us to home or work. For blind people, the benefits of technology are even greater as these new tools provide the basic ability to access information that was previously unavailable without sight or was difficult and time consuming to retrieve.

+
+
CBI: Forging the Future
+National Braille Press has developed a team of experienced academics, engineers, inventors, and entrepreneurs, who are braille readers or experts in the field of blindness. Led by National Braille Press's president, they are exploring new ways to produce:
+

+
tactile images, which allow blind children and adults to explore by hand the visual imagery that permeates the sighted world.

+
braille textbooks and standardized tests, which are unavailable to many blind students who need them due to a national shortage of skilled professional braille transcribers.

+
technology, to help blind children learn braille and blind adults to keep up with rapidly changing technology.

+

+
+
Touch of Genius Prize for Innovation
+The Touch of Genius Prize was established to recognize an individual or group of individuals who contribute to innovation in the field of tactile literacy for blind people. The Prize can be granted for a new educational method; a new tactile literacy product; or a new technological advance. The $20,000 prize is provided through support from The Gibney Family Foundation and National Braille Press.

+
+
The Touch of Genius Prize, as part of the Center for Braille Innovation, helps inspire innovation in technology and education and acts as a potential vehicle for exploring partnerships with those who are on the forefront of tactile innovations.

-
What is the purpose of the ReadBooks! program?

-
-

-Reading is the first step toward literacy. ReadBooks!
-Because Braille Matters encourages families to consider
-braille at the earliest possible age and to read
-print/braille books together at home. Braille is the only
-independent means of reading and writing for a child who
-cannot see.

-
-
Why is braille important?

-
-

-Proficiency in braille is strongly correlated to future
-success in school and in the job market. The majority of
-blind people who are competitively employed use braille.
-Studies show the most proficient braille readers are those
-who started braille at a young age and who received frequent
-braille instruction in school.

-
How are ReadBooks! book bags distributed?

-
-

-If a family contacts NBP directly, a bag will be shipped to your home. National Braille Press also works with early
-intervention professionals and teachers of the visually
-impaired who identify families for the program and who

-
Who funds the program?

-
-

-Start-up funds for the ReadBooks! program came from Mellon
-Charitable Trust. A significant grant from Readers Digest
-Partnership for Sight Foundation launched the program across the
-country. Additional funding from other foundations will
-enable us to continue to reach every blind child in

+
+
What is the purpose of the ReadBooks! program?

+
+

+Reading is the first step toward literacy. ReadBooks! Because Braille Matters encourages families to consider braille at the earliest possible age and to read print/braille books together at home. Braille is the only independent means of reading and writing for a child who cannot see.
+

+
+
Why is braille important?

+
+

+Braille proficiency is strongly correlated to future success in school and in the job market. The majority of blind people who are competitively employed use braille. Studies show the most proficient braille readers are those who started braille at a young age and received frequent braille instruction in school.

+
+
+
How does the program work?

+

+Families with young blind children, birth through seven, receive a free ReadBooks! book bag containing print/braille books, a braille primer for parents, braille alphabet cards, bookmarks, tactile graphics, and a resource book. Braille Bags are available in English or Spanish.
+

+
+
How do I order ReadBooks! bags?

+
+

If you are an educator or professional working with blind children, please be sure to review our
+[page programs/readbooks/educator_info.html]participation agreement before you order. Parents and care givers do not have to sign this agreement.

+
+
How are ReadBooks! book bags distributed?

+
+

+When a family [page programs/readbooks/request.html]contacts NBP directly, a bag will be shipped to your home. National Braille Press also works with early intervention professionals and teachers of the visually impaired who identify families for the program and who aid in delivering the bags. No disclosure of families' personal information is required. Agencies identify families who could benefit and NBP sends them the requisite number of bags.

+
+
Who funds the program?

+
+

+Start-up funds for the ReadBooks! program came from Mellon Charitable Trust. A significant grant from Readers Digest Partnership for Sight Foundation launched the program across the country. Additional funding from other foundations will enable us to continue to reach every blind child in the country; these foundations include BNY Mellon Charitable Giving Program, Alice P. Chase Trust, Edith Glick Shoolman Foundation, Delta Gamma Foundation, Moses Kimball Fund, and John W. Alden Trust.
+

+
+
Is the program only for blind children?

+
+

+ReadBooks! bags are appropriate for totally blind children and visually impaired children whose vision may be unstable or who may not be able to efficiently read print when the material is too lengthy or complex. Program participants are encouraged to request a book bag for any potential braille reader.

+
+
+
Can I order a bag even if I'm not sure my child will read braille?

+Of course, you may not yet know exactly what your child's abilities will be. What can he see? Will she be a braille reader? Parents may not know the answers to these questions until their children are much older, but that doesn't mean you can't expose them to braille in the mean time! +
+
I want to tell you how wonderful the braille book bag that I received from you all for my 6-year-old son who is visually impaired. My daughter who is sighted has also benefitted greatly from the information in the bag.
+She is a very good braille typer and is even better now that she has learned more about contractions, etc. She has transcribed some kids books for a vision teacher in a local public school. She is a good resource for her brother. My husband and I have also learned a lot about braille and we are all continually impressed on how braille is used to bring the world to children who are blind or visually impaired. Thank you for making these bags so easily available!

+SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT NATIONAL BRAILLE PRESS
+
+[TEXT IN A SHADED BOX]
+
"Implicitly or otherwise, the educational system has diminished expectations of the blind. If science is hard for me, a sighted adult might reason, it must be doubly hard for a blind person
.
- Geerat J. Vermeij, renowned blind marine biologist

+
+
Can Blind People Truly Excel in Science?
+The opportunity to excel in fields requiring a systematic framework, use logic for problem solving and entail a disciplined approach, provides individuals with a way to think about their world and make sense of their surroundings. While taken for granted by most schoolchildren in the country, this opportunity is limited for those that are blind. Blind people cannot observe, collect and process data in the same way sighted people do, so frequently they are not given the same early encouragement, training and tools as their sighted peers.

+
+
Giving Blind Children the Tools to Pursue Scientific Discovery
+[Insert image images/book_photos/TOUCH.jpg] Image of NBP science book covers here- Touch the Stars Cover]
+National Braille Press strives to present blind children and their parents with science books as early as possible. The precursors to scientific thinking usually begin with an early exposure to natural science such as toddler board books about wild animal families, early-reader books about the life cycles of butterflies and activity books with simple science experiments. This sparks natural curiosity and paves the way for future interest and exploration.

+
+
[page TOUCH.html]The Touch the Stars astronomy book is a unique braille and large print book that helps whet the appetite for science for blind children.
+
+
How Does Braille Complement Technology?
+An abundance of technical tools and gadgets is available to organize our lives, entertain us and connect us to home or work. For blind people, the benefits of technology are even greater as these new tools provide the basic ability to access information that was previously unavailable.

+
Initially, students need to be able to take notes in class, work on papers, and refer to course materials in order to succeed in school. As they progress towards a professional job, adults must be able read email, obtain information from the Internet, develop a PowerPoint presentation, or a legal brief. Given the expectation of technical literacy in school and in the workforce, it is vital that blind children also have technical tools that are available and affordable.

+
Blind people who learn braille and develop fluency with technology have a significant advantage, are more employable, and are able to shift blindness from a problem to an inconvenience.
