[UEB Maths] Code books, etc., for meeting

I have a paper copy of the BANA Code for Chemical Notation 1997 and
Helen is bringing one too. Bruce, we have a braille version of that here
too so we can manage without an electronic version if we need to. I also
have a paper copy of the BAUK Braille Science Notation 1989. Examples of
Chemistry examples from books would be a big help Stephen thanks.
Joe raises the question of what we might need to consider for the
computer language area. Two things spring to my mind. One is the
brailling of instruction manuals for equipment such as braille
notetakers or talking phones, some examples from those might be good.
Another thought is that the style of computer programming languages has
changed over the last decade, it will still be true that the braille
just needs to enable the reader to key in a program exactly as it is
written, but we could do with some up to date examples, perhaps from a
tutorial book. There may not be many "rules" needed so we will need to
decide how much to include in the way of guidance and examples.
On the diagram side, I have revisited the symbols allocated for
horizontal line mode, and would welcome discussion on when a transcriber
should consider using these.

Besides paper copies of codes for myself, I'll bring an extra paper copy
of the BAUK Science Notation (which includes chemistry and electronics)
for Janet, as requested. Should I bring any other paper copies? Apart
from the print version of the Science code all the others should be
available on the BAUK web site for downloading in either print or
braille.
I have a paper copy of the BANA Chemistry code in draft version, which I
will bring in the absence of anything more recent. I will also have a
look through some chemistry books for other examples and notation we may
need to consider.

Subject: [UEB Maths] some questions about our face to face meeting
Hi everyone
I am sketching out an agenda for our face to face meeting based on the
objectives I circulated on 12 and 16 December. These were: Chemistry,
Computer Language, Labelling Diagrams, Feedback on the draft document,
and the issues around Backtranslation. My current thoughts are that
rather than work sequentially through these topics over the three and a
half days, it could be more effective if some timeslots covered two
topics in parallel.
So the shape of the meeting could look something like:
Tuesday afternoon: welcome, discussion of objectives for Wednesday and
who is needed where
Wednesday morning: split writing session (Computer language and
Chemistry? - Diagrams and Feedback?)
Wednesday afternoon: discussion items from both morning sessions
Thursday morning: split writing session (Chemistry? - Rewrites based on
Feedback?)
Thursday afternoon: brainstorm on back translation
Friday morning: discussion items from either of the Wednesday morning
sessions and/or split writing session
Friday afternoon: summary of what we have achieved and what needs
finalising
If folk feel this could work then perhaps Joe could lead the Computer
language bit, Stephen the Chemistry, Helen and myself the Diagrams
(which could include the line drawing symbols) and the rewrites, and
Bruce the feedback (though this could be delegated to Josie if Bruce
needs to be in the other stream). With our three observers, Josie Howse,
Phyllis Landon and Maria Stevens, we will have at least eight people for
the joint discussion sessions - it may be helpful to take brief minutes
for these and Maria has offered to coordinate that.
Thank you Stephen for the update on the BAUK Braille Science notation.
Could you bring a paper copy as well as the electronic version, I have
left it too late to order one from RNIB.
Bruce, does ABA have a similar publication that you could bring? I only
have the ABA Maths one. And are you and Josie still happy to do a brief
presentation to a slightly wider audience on going live with UEB in
Australia? If so I could put that in at the end of the afternoon on the
Wednesday, or an informal early evening session with drinks.
Joe, I tried to access the electronic version of the BANA Chemistry code
from the link on their website but couldn't see it, do you have access
to that? Helen and I both have print versions.
I am on leave from Saturday 10 Feb to Sunday 18 Feb and will be out of
email contact for that week. It would be good to hear back from everyone
this week if possible, just to confirm your flight details, to let me
know if you have any dietary requirements for lunch, and to make any
comments on the proposed agenda, or what other resources we might need.
When I get back I will touch base with individuals as needed and
circulate a formal agenda.
Janet
