Hello Maths Working Group Members
Here in South Africa we plan to implement UEB for the three lower grades in
our schools from January 2008. We have a training session for teachers in
September. We are doing a book on numeracy for beginners and have a
question.
What do we do for a blank space ( "place holder") where something is to be
filled in, as in:
3 + 2 =
2 + = 5
I recall that earlier this year there was some correspondence in your group
and that the "visible space" (dots 346) was mentioned, but I am not sure
what was agreed upon, and the transcribers want a quick reply from me. Can
you help?
Thanks
Antonnette

Our hands are a bit tied here because UEB avoids having special rules for
roman numbers. If the definition of an item was changed to include letters
preceded by the capital word indicator it would cover this example, but then
you'd have complications around capitalised variables in the superscript
position, for example e to the XY.

Hello All
I am just getting round to try to draft the section on chemistry for the
UEB technical guidelines, and I wonder if someone can confirm (or
otherwise) that if you use a capital word indicator at the beginning of
a supercript that doesn't count as a grouping indicator, and you would
need the normal braille grouping signs as well. I am thinking of
expressions like Fe superscript III, where it is tempting not to put in
braille grouping signs.
Thanks,
Stephen
