Hello again everyone.=20

After our rush to get the Mathematical Guidelines ready for the April
meeting of the ICEB executive I think we have all been glad of a
breather, but it is now time to progress other items assigned to our
committee. I should also apologise for not circulating the results of
the Maths session at the executive meeting to this group earlier. Our
recommendation that the document we presented should be released for
trial use was approved. The to do list from the meeting asked executive
members to "circulate the math guidelines within your country during the
next six months and ask for feedback (send to Janet)". It has begun to
be used in parts of Australia and feedback is already being gathered. In
New Zealand I will be gathering feedback as I use it for training
producers (probably in 2007). Helen, are you aware whether there is
likely to be any Maths training scheduled in Canada that will be using
it? I will check with Antonnette for South Africa and Jean for Nigeria.
There may also be people in the US and UK that will be interested in
looking more closely at it now that it is in the public arena. Darleen
has asked that the release period should be finite and that a revised
version should be prepared for the next General Assembly. As part of
that process we need to revisit the need for a more compact Maths "Rule"
as we discussed at our last teleconference.

In the meantime we have other areas to address. Our bit of the executive
to do list had the following listed.

- labelling diagrams to be completed
- additional symbols to be assigned, especially chemistry ones
- add examples of hexadecimal numbers to the maths guidelines
- resolve issue of page numbering in the braille edition of the
guidelines
Also:
- assign a symbol for a blank space=20

The last one above has arisen more recently when brailling maths
problems that have a space to be filled in. Joe's suggestion is that we
could use the symbol that is already assigned for a significant space in
a programming context (dots 346 I think) but we need to formally word
this and pass it to the overarching committee for approval.

It would be good to hear from everyone, if only to say that you received
this message and to indicate if you have a preference for what we should
tackle first. Any input from observers to this list is also very
welcome.
