(Apologies if my comments show that I have missed something, but I am =
still not directly receiving messages on this maths list, so I am =
perhaps out of date.)
In her response to my comments on the draft, Janet mentioned that the =
continuation sign has been found useful in Australia. I wonder if =
Australia have used it in a similar way to its tradiational use in the =
BAUK code? In the BAUK code a dot 5 is used at the end of a braille line =
where the maths expression continues onto the next line. However, this =
is a different idea from the use as stated in UEB. In the BAUK code its =
use is independent of print line breaks but depends only on the =
mathematical sense (of the expression continuing over braille lines). In =
UEB its use is to represent the absence a print line break at the end of =
a braille line, and so depends on print line wraps which can be =
arbitrary. I think there is an argument for introducing into UEB the use =
of a continuation sign in the BAUK sense, but as I said before, I can't =
see a strong reason for using a continuation sign in maths in the =
existing UEB sense. (Note that I am not currently advocating the =
introduction of such a continuation sign in the BAUK sense, but I can =
see more sense in it.)
On another matter, it may be of interest that there are a couple of =
short UEB maths samples (which I have just done myself) on the BAUK web =
site: www.bauk.org.uk.
They come with a "health warning", as although I have aimed to follow =
the current guidelines, I have also gone ahead with some of the =
suggestions I have made and formatting or transcription preferences I =
have, partly for definiteness, partly to test them out, and partly to be =
reassuring to the UK audience. I hope to add more samples to give the =
public some exposure to UEB, even if they are to some extent =
experimental and unofficial. If you have a look at them and want to pass =
me comments or errors you find please feel free to do so.
