The Vision 5K Run and Walk
National Braille Press is excited to be participating once again in the Vision5K Run and Walk on Saturday, June 7th at Roberto Clemente Field in the Fenway neighborhood. Last year the race drew close to 1,000 runners and walkers and raised over $300,000 to help blind and visually impaired people nationwide.
Join this unique race and experience what all the buzz is about. There are many ways to become involved. You can:
Runners and walkers, sighted and blind, will stand side by side again this year and experience what solidarity truly is. The Vision 5K is organized by Dave McGillivray, Race Director of the Boston Marathon, who believes strongly in the mission: "So many charitable activities raise money to fix problems, but the Vision 5K is about embracing possibilities."
The Vision 5K is a collaboration among five blindness organizations serving the blind and visually impaired: the Carroll Center for the Blind, MAB Community Services, National Braille Press, New England Eye Institute, and Perkins School for the Blind. The Vision 5K is also the ONLY race that offers the Blindfold Challenge ? a way to show solidarity and demonstrate that fear is the only disability! The Blindfold Challenge is a unique challenge. Yes, it does require participants to wear a blindfold but you get back so much more in return for taking that first step. Those that took part in the Blindfold Challenge last year felt triumphant at the end of the race:
Harry Potter & the Walking Wizards captains (Adam Roberge and Ashley Bernard)
and their families join the festivities at the 2007 Walk.
I ran this race to challenge myself, to confront my fears. But that day, I understood the real importance of the race and the lesson I will take with me. At the awards ceremony, I saw the incredibly talented blind and visually impaired runners who had traveled from around the world to participate at a level worthy of their talent and training."
