Our braille readers appreciate our Lifelong Learning publications for
their breadth of subject matter, technical clarity, real-life examples,
readbility, and affordability. Our publications help blind people
"live life to the fullest." Our Lifelong Learning
publications fall within the following general subject categories:
-
Current Affairs: National Braille Press was founded in 1927
to publish the Weekly News so blind people could obtain the
information they needed to practice good citizenship. We continue
that tradition today with Syndicated
Columnists Weekly, a weekly compendium of timely articles and
editorials by nationally respected writers such as William Safire,
George Will, Maureen Dowd, and Paul Krugman.
-
Employment and Careers: In order to provide blind people with
the information they need to be more independent, we publish books to
improve job skills such as negotiation and writing, and to give a clear
understanding of global work-place issues. Among our titles
we have published
Getting to Yes and Who Moved My Cheese?,
along with Strunk and White's Elements of Style.
-
Computer Skills and Access: Because computer skills are now
essential for employment, we also publish many computer-related materials.
Recent publications include Windows XP Explained,
Word for Windows Quick and Easy,
Finding eBooks on the Internet,
Computer Braille Code Made Easy, and Internet
Explorer 6 and Outlook Express Reference Card. Many of our computer books
and materials are written by blind computer experts.
-
Health and Safety: To ensure that blind adolescents and adults can research
and read about particular health and safety issues, we produce a number of
publications in braille
including the Menopause Guidebook, reprinted in an updated edition;
the Period Book for teenage girls; the nationwide best-selling
puberty book It's Perfectly Normal; and Safe Without
Sight, a book on self-defense strategies for blind people.
-
Nutrition and Hands-On Projects: Many of our braille readers, men and women
alike, clamor for publications that give hands-on, practical directions for cooking,
gardening, sewing, knitting, and the like. We produce a regular round of cookbooks,
working to vary the subject matter from year to year, such as
George Foreman's Lean, Mean, Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine Cookbook,
Easy Vegetarian Dinners, Pillsbury Fast and Healthy
Cookbook, along with a cookbook written by a blind cook for a blind audience
called Cooking With Feeling. We have also produced practical books
such as Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean, a book of household
cleaning tips, and craft books that focus on knitting or gardening
with children.
- Women's Issues: In addition to the above-mentioned
Syndicated Columnists Weekly, the second periodical
we produce, Our Special, gives practical
information -- drawn from popular women's magazines or provided by blind contributing
editors -- on parenting, careers, fashion, money, and many other topics. Since its
beginning in 1930, Our Special has been the only
braille magazine for women edited for and by blind women.
