A baby scorpion rides on its mother's back.
A baby alligator hides in its mother's mouth!
What about a baby leopard? A baby elephant?
This charming entry in the "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science" series shows how animal babies are protected. The range of behavior is broad and intriguing -- from reptiles hatched from eggs and surviving by following their instincts to mammals creating sophisticated homes and using their wiles for the protection of their young. The brief descriptions of how a variety of baby animals survive various dangers and predators introduce the concepts of supervision, camouflage, feeding, cleaning, and homes. Fraser's writing is direct, and her observations are clearly expressed. The final pages offer a few facts about certain baby animals and tips on what to do if a wild animal baby is found.
My daughter loves this book. She loves animals and she also likes hearing about mother-child bonds. She asks for this one over and over. There’s age-appropriate simple information about animal behavior and a lot to discuss together. Highly recommended.
